Andy Wilson - Supervisor: Prof Bill Nuttall
I studied for my BEng with the Open University whilst working in the offshore construction industry. My PhD will be entitled ‘Future Fission Systems and Hydrogen Production’. I will be looking at the potential applications of fission energy to the production of hydrogen and synthetic fuels. I will be focusing on generation IV reactor designs with sufficiently high temperature output for the sulphur-iodine (S-I) cycle method of hydrogen production. Should it prove economically and technically feasible, this has the potential to displace steam reformation of hydrocarbons, a carbon-intensive process currently used for the majority of hydrogen production.
